When We Prayed the Novenas Together

By Sister Marcianne Bzdon, SSND

One of the best memories I have is the Christmas Novena at Our Lady of the Lake Motherhouse in Mequon, Wisconsin.

I can vividly recall lining up in the hallway in front of the Chapel and being overwhelmed by the beauty of the altar when the doors of Our Lady of the Angels Chapel opened.

There was an array of candles on the altar and in the dimly lit chapel. They had been arranged by the sacristan, Sister Mary Sophina Pokrzewinska. It was just so beautiful.

Praying the novena with the entire Motherhouse Community was also beautiful, and every night, the candles were arranged in a different pattern, but always so beautiful.

I don’t know if I thought so at the time, but to me, it was one of the ways of reminding us that the Light of the World was coming.

I still pray a version of the novena and think about those nights in the Motherhouse at Mequon and the beauty of the altar.
