Many, many moons ago when I was a young sister, I was stationed at St. Benedict, Blue Island, Il, where I taught some of the children from Robbins - a very poor village south of Chicago. Today I reside at Marian Village, a retirement home in Homer Glen, Il - but I have not forgotten the people of Robbins.
A few years ago I heard of a couple, Cathy and Chuck, who deliver needed items to the people of Robbins once a month. I contacted them and from that time on, I have gathered articles for their poor. Cathy and Chuck pick them up and deliver them to those in need. The donors are the sisters, residents and the employees of Marian Village.
The sisters and residents help me sort, fold and prepare the items we have gathered. At times we have collected 25 pounds of clothing, throw pillows, floor mats, bath towels, personal care items, clothes hampers, costume jewelry and wristwatches, kitchen items, coloring books, crayons, candy, cookies and crackers - to name a few things.
When we receive articles that are not a good fit for Robbins or we just have too much, we donate those things to SAVERS which is a huge second-hand store that works with and benefits the Epilepsy Foundation
I’m told by Cathy and Chuck that we at Marian Village give the most and the best.
Helping the people of Robbins in this new form of ministry continues to give me joy!
