NDMU Honors Sister Sharon Slear

“Let justice roll like a river.”

With these words from the prophet Amos, Father Joe Muth, chaplain at Notre Dame of Maryland University, began the dedication ceremony for the Sister Sharon Slear Center for Service, Peace, Social Justice, and Community Engagement.

The center was instituted to serve the diverse material needs of the students,  and it has extended its mission to the community and to the promotion of service learning in the classroom.

The speakers at the ceremony gave testimony to Sister Sharon’s witness to the ideals of the center and to her role in developing and implementing its mission.

In her remarks, Sister Sharon, recently retired Provost of the University, noted that the center’s mission is rooted in the charism and mission of the School Sisters of Notre Dame.  Through Sister Sharon’s leadership, NDMU has also supported the SSND commitment to Haiti by teacher training and groundbreaking contributions to curriculum development specific to the needs of the Haitian students and teachers.

Those in attendance included students, Sisters and community members who aim to continue Sister Sharon's legacy of service on campus and beyond in the years to come. Sister Charmaine Kroger, SSND was also on hand to congratulate Sister Sharon on the recognition.
