A Glowing Christmas Memory By Sister Justine Nutz

By Sister Justine Nutz, SSND

Singing O Tannenbaum! around the Christmas tree holds many memories for me.

My mother brought tree candleholders over from Germany.

From watching the candles burn in those candleholders on our tree in the dark living room, to my cat trying to swat the reachable tinsel, to January and the ancient Manhattan custom of pushing old Christmas trees through apartment windows down to the street and then watching the pile burn at night ... all this I can still see and feel clearly!

After Christmas, the sight of unsold trees on street corners leaning forlornly on one another touched my child's heart as I thought of how unwanted those trees felt.

To this day my heart goes out to every needy tree and plant I see!
